The bad news is, you’ve found a broken link. But the good news is, you’ve also found a bonus story!
Green Man
“Never trust the green man,” Dad used to say. I didn't believe him – why would they put them all over the place if you can’t trust them? “Watch the road,” he said, “the traffic lights if you must, but don’t rely on that bastard.” I never took any notice. I just crossed when the green man told me to like everyone else.
I changed my mind after the accident. A woman with a toddler crossed with the green man. The lights were green too, apparently, and a post van came round the corner at the same time. Both of them died – the boy straight away, his mother a few days later. It was all over the news.
I happened to be there that day – at the crossing – just as the police arrived. Everyone was distracted by the drama on the road, but I saw them: the green man and the red man, both in the top panel, comparing notes and getting their story straight.
Dad’s advice often seemed ridiculous, but I follow most of it now. He had some interesting ideas about the man with the shovel on roadwork signs too. Now, I’ll drive miles out of my way to avoid roadworks. “He’s not digging,” Dad used to say. “He’s burying.”
