About this Blog

Four Wise Monkeys is designed to unite my desire to develop as a writer with my urge to blog. It is based around the proverbial Three Wise Monkeys, with the focus being on the human senses rather than moral principles. Each post will relate to a sense represented by a monkey: "See no evil, Hear no evil, Taste no evil, Smell no evil." My hope is that blogging in this way will encourage me to think of blogging as a kind of writing exercise rather than something to distract me from my writing.

Anticipation

Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, soft dried fruit: all flavours I’m looking forward to in the morning. We don’t really celebrate Easter in our house, but we’re happy to jump on any excuse to have hot cross buns for breakfast.

I don’t think there’s a sweet spice I don’t love. They’re all vaguely Christmassy, even when they come in Easter-shaped breads: full of warmth and holiday and magic. They add a depth to everything, making tastes rounder and fuller. And combined with soft, sweet bread and plump sultanas, there’s just no room for improvement.

The dilemma will be this: toasted and hot with puddles of melting butter, or soft and cool with fresh fruit? Both perhaps. Holidays are meant for indulgence, after all.
